BCache Control Settings
To activate the full performance of your MACCELERATE!750 processor
accelerator card, you have to activate the on-board backside cache
of the MACCELERATE!750. The backside cache is activated with the
"BCache Control" utility which is supplied with the card.
The "BCache Control" utility must be copied to you Control panel
drawer to enable automatical activation of the backside cache
on every restart of your computer.
The following settings must be made in "BCache Control":
SIZE:
The SIZE setting for the backside cache must be adjusted to the
cache size of the MACCELERATE!750 version you are using. Please
refer to your manual or the box to identify the size of the backside
cache on your particular MACCELERATE!750 (either 512K or 1024K).
CLOCK:
This setting determines the speed with which the backside cache
is accessed by the processor. The backside cache on all MACCELERATE!750
cards runs nominally at 50% of the processor speed, therefore
the correct setting for CLOCK is 2:1; however, many of the boards
may work properly with the 3:2 setting due to the tolerances of
the cache memories used. In this setting, the backside cache runs
with 66.6% of the processor speed, which may helps to gain a few
percent of additional performance. The MACCELERATE!750 cards can
not be used with a 1:1 setting.
ATTENTION:
If your computer freezes immediately after activating the "ENABLE
NOW" button in the "BCache Control" utility, your CLOCK setting
is probably wrong; with a 1:1 setting this will happen in any
case.
ENABLE CACHE ON RESTART:
When this switch is activated, the "BCache Control" utility will
activate the backside cache automatically on every restart of
your computer.
COMPATIBILITY:
This setting is currently not used, and can be ignored. We recommend,
however, to set COMPATIBILITY to the processor type which has
been installed in your system before the MACCELERATE!750 was installed.
ENABLE NOW / DISABLE NOW:
This butto is used to activate/deactivate the backside cache during
operation. Please note that any changes of the settings described
above will only become valid when the backside cache is disabled
(the butto shows ENABLE NOW) while the settings are changed. If
you change any settings you can immediately test them to verify
proper operations of the settings you have choosen.
A NOTE ON AUTOMATICAL ACTIVATION of the backside cache on restart of your computer: During retart
of your computer, the G3 icon of the "BCache Control" utility
will appear at the lower edge of the screen, and will show a green
checkmark if the activation of the backside cache was succesful.
If your computer stops booting after the G3 icon appeared, without
showing the green checkmark, you have probably entered wrong settings
such as a CLOCK setting of 1:1. In this case, start your computer
without any system extension (by holding down the shift-key during
startup), start the "BCache Control" utility directly from the
.... drawer in your system folder, and change the settings to
a valid setting. |
